CALM vs X vs A-Series: Which Spa Is Worth It

CALM vs X vs A-Series: Which Bullfrog Spa Is Worth It?

All three series share Bullfrog's core engineering, but they're built for different budgets and different lifespans. Here's the real difference.

What's the quick answer?

CALM is the budget-friendly entry point, X is the mid-tier upgrade, and A-Series is the long-term investment built for the heaviest use and longest life. The right one depends on how long you plan to own it and how hard it'll be used.

How do the warranties compare?

Warranty length is the clearest signal of how each series is built to last:

Major components: CALM Series, 2 years. X Series, 3 years. A-Series, 5 years.

Shell surface: CALM Series, 2 years. X Series, 3 years. A-Series, 7 years.

Shell structure: CALM Series, 3 years. X Series, 5 years. A-Series, 10 years.

Frame (EnduraFrame): CALM Series, 3 years. X Series, 5 years. A-Series, lifetime.

Audio, lighting, and water care: 1 year across all three series.

The jump from CALM to X roughly doubles your coverage. The jump to A-Series adds a lifetime frame warranty and more than doubles shell and structure coverage compared to X.

How does the engineering actually differ?

Less plumbing, more efficiency, as you move up the lineup. A-Series uses Bullfrog's patented JetPak system for up to 90% less plumbing than a conventional spa, with water routed straight through the JetPak bulkhead. X Series doesn't use JetPaks but is still built without 90-degree plumbing fittings, a common failure and freeze-damage point in conventional spas. CALM Series shares similar plumbing to X Series.

Equipment also changes by tier: A-Series and X Series both run on Gecko equipment, while CALM Series uses Balboa equipment with simpler push-button controls.

What about pumps and customization?

A-Series is the only series with true JetPak customization — 16 different JetPak options that can be swapped between seats and adjusted for pressure. X and CALM Series use built-in jets instead, which are easy to replace but not interchangeable in the same way.

Pump configuration also scales with tier: A-Series includes a circulation pump standard on most models, X Series offers it as an optional upgrade on most models, and CALM Series doesn't offer a circulation pump at all.

Which series should I actually buy?

If you're planning to own your home (or rental) for more than a few years, A-Series is almost always the better value. The lifetime frame warranty and 90% plumbing reduction mean fewer repairs and lower energy costs over time, which adds up fast in a climate like ours where the spa runs year-round.

CALM Series makes sense if you have a strict upfront budget, a smaller footprint (7'x7' or 6'6"x6'6"), or don't expect to own the property long-term. X Series sits in between — a real step up in warranty and plumbing durability without the full JetPak investment.

For rental and Airbnb properties specifically, we almost always recommend A-Series. Guests use and abuse spas, and the longer warranty and lower long-term repair costs matter more when the spa is running non-stop for paying guests rather than occasional personal use.
