Is a saltwater hot tub chlorine-free?
No. A saltwater spa still contains chlorine, that's how the system works in the first place. A salt cell runs an electrical current through salt (NaCl) dissolved in the water, a process called electrolysis, and that reaction produces chlorine. The system then uses that chlorine to sanitize the water, exactly like a spa that's chlorinated directly. Salt isn't an alternative to chlorine, it's a chlorine generator with an extra step.

Why is salt harder on a hot tub than a mineral/chlorine system?
Salt is corrosive, and a hot tub is a tough place to introduce it. Unlike a swimming pool, a spa is a small volume of water running hot, recirculating constantly, and packed with metal components that stay in near-constant contact with that water. Salt is corrosive and can damage elements such as heaters, pump seals, jet bearings, and stainless-steel fittings over time. Bullfrog's @ease System never puts salt in the water, so that corrosion risk isn't part of the equation.
Does a lower chlorine residual actually make a difference?
Yes. HotSpring's salt system runs at roughly 3-5 ppm chlorine to keep the water sanitized, and granular chlorine is often still needed on top of that when the salt cell can't keep up. Bullfrog's @ease System uses a chlorine cartridge and a mineral cartridge together, so the two sanitizers share the workload and the chlorine residual needed drops to around 1 ppm, the same range as most city tap water. Less chlorine in the water generally means less odor, less skin and eye irritation, and less wear on materials like swimsuits and covers.
Do any Bullfrog models reduce chlorine even further?
Yes:
- A Series comes standard with the WellSpring Ozone System, which oxidizes contaminants and extends the life of the chlorine cartridge. Ozone generators last about 2 years.
- M Series includes AOP (Advanced Oxidation Process) as the primary sanitizing method, with chlorine only as a backup, cutting chlorine demand by up to 90% compared to traditional chlorine or salt systems. AOP cartridges last about 3 years.

So which is better for a hot tub: salt or chlorine?
For a hot tub specifically, a salt system doesn't come out ahead of a low-chlorine mineral system.
